Software

There are many game format options in the laser tag world. One of the older styles of play is a recharge game. Players are divided into two teams, but they have limited resources (both the number of times they can fire and the number of times they can be tagged). If any of these laser tag resources run out they must return to their base area and recharge, replenishing their resources.

Our LT-12 Laser Tag game software can provide your center with a variety of enjoyable game formats including non-recharge-style games. However, our experience has shown that a recharge laser tag game format offers players a better game experience as well as one that can reduce the opportunity for injury in most arenas, especially larger ones.

1. Spreads Players around the Field

When players have to recharge, they are required to return to their base area energizer. On average, they will take many different pathways through your laser tag arena because players will tend to avoid opposing players who are activated. Likewise, players will naturally disperse across your playing field evenly. This benefits you, the operator, in a variety of ways.

If players tend to spread themselves around your laser tag arena they will be less likely to clump together in a small area. This reduces the opportunity for injury.

Also, players will have a better laser tag experience. Not only will they see different parts of the arena, but they will encounter different players, work with different teammates and probably play different styles of laser tag. All told, this will tend to make your laser tag experience more interesting than the typical shields up shields down game format.

2. Prevents Players from Holding One Position

Another huge advantage of recharging is limiting an experienced laser tag player's ability to control the game. Without recharging, a player never has to leave a particular location for the entire game. An experienced laser tag player will select a location that is easily defended or a spot that offers a wide view of the playing field. This will allow them to dominate the game in a way that frustrates the bulk of your players. In a recharge game format, no player will be able to hold a single position for a significant amount of time, much less the entire game.

3. Prevents Players from Following another Player

By the same token, recharging prevents one player from following another player for more than a short period of time. Many laser tag game systems recommend rules to prevent following or stalking players because of technology flaws or the ease in which experienced players may dominate a game. By having a limited number of laser pulses and tags, the experienced player will sooner or later run out and have to return to their base to recharge.

Important note: The LASERTRON LT-12 Game System offers a reflex tag for non-recharge games and handicapping options in our recharge game to prevent one player from being able to ruin another player's laser tag experience.

4. Allows Open Bases

In most laser tag arenas, bases are hidden in small out of the way places. In some of our competitorsa arenas, we have seen base targets at the end of dead-end hallways. This is necessary in many arenas because the laser tag game format does not offer any value to playing defense.

Unfortunately, the results of hiding the game bases are clear. Only experienced players learn where the bases are and these players end up with even higher scores because of this knowledge. Placing bases in small areas or at the end of dead-end hallways increases chances of injury due to bottlenecking of players.

Recharge games allow you to build a more open base area in your laser tag arena. This allows more players to tag the base and allows other players to effectively guard the base without increased risk of injury.

Equipment

The LASERTRON phaser is fitted with a soft protective foam glove, which covers 50% of the phaser, protecting against injury. Our phaser also has a big, red "safety button." Easy to understand, the "safety button" ensures two-handed, controlled play. Parents and players will appreciate your efforts to protect everyone playing.

Balanced Game Environment

To design and build a great game experience, LASERTRON creates what we call a balanced game environment where players have highly interactive game encounters with each other on an even or fair playing field. Like all sports, it is very important to have a symmetrical or balanced laser tag arena. Obstacles in a laser tag arena must be designed and laid out with great care and thought.

Weave been developing this balance between arena symmetry, design, obstacle layout and game system integration for over 20 years. It is because of this extreme focus that we have been able to develop the most highly interactive laser tag experiences.

Examples & Solutions to Poor Arena Design

Now, letas examine the inherent pitfalls and design flaws that lead to poor arena design.

By knowing how to spot dysfunctional arena designs, you will be able to understand why LASERTRONas arenas are all about the game.

Arena Flaws

  • Remember, laser tag is a fluid game. Bottlenecks and caged-in or tight corridors are not conducive to a fun and safe game. It creates interactions, but the wrong kind. It creates the kind of interactions (ex: conflicts, potentially hostile situations, etc.) that most paying customers do not want to experience and that the wrong types of players tend to make worse. This style of arena also makes it difficult for your referee to maintain a safe playing environment.

    Multi level safety designs

    Mesh Railings

    Steel mesh is used on our railings for both the ramps and second level. This makes it possible for players on the first level to tag players on the second level. It also makes the game more enjoyable for younger, shorter players who may not be able to fire or see over the rails. With mesh railings, shorter players can still see and tag players on the first floor level through the mesh.

    Because shorter players can see through the mesh, we were able to increase the height of the rail from 42 inches to 48 inches. This increases the safety for smaller and younger players, as well as adults.

    Many of our competitorsa arenas use solid walls and solid rails on their ramps and second levels. This design creates situations where players on the first floor are sitting ducks. Solid rails and solid walls on the upper level give the players on the upper level a tremendous advantage (superior cover) over players on the first floor or ramps leading to the upper level. This forces the designer or owner to create either a very tight maze with high walls or you end up with all of the players crowded together in small spaces on the second level. When players crowd together, injury and damage to the players and equipment will increase.

    Ramps

    Ramps on steel arenas can be very wide. Ramps on recent LASERTRON designs can vary from four feet to eight feet wide, allowing two or more players to pass safely.

    A steel arena provides you with the best long-term playability for your players.

    Designing an arena with balance and symmetry will allow you to create a fair and navigable playing field for both teams. Maximizing obstacle density and player pathways will allow you to maximize the number of players you can fit into your laser tag arena. Maximizing the number of decision nodes increases the number of alternative routes your players can take. Proper obstacle design will help eliminate blind corners and dead zones and create a much safer playing environment.
